Collies come in two varieties, Rough Collie and the Smooth Collie. The exact origin of the Collie is uncertain, but they have existed for centuries as herding dogs of Scotland and England. Blue merle Collies were originally known as "tortoise shell" to describe their color. Queen Victoria saw her first Collies in the 1860's, and she enthusiastically began to sponsor them, causing a marked surge in the breed's popularity.
